Herefordshire is a gastronomic jewel though nobody knows it yet!

Pubs

  1. The New Inn, Pembridge (01544 388427). Just a fantastic pub - as pubs should be. It's 1.5 miles walk exactly. Good honest non-fussy food (and not a microwave in sight), as far from Nouvelle cuisine as you could get! If you are a large group then if you give Jane (The Landlady) some advance notice they'll cook a whole joint of beef for you and it's worth it.
  2. The Harp Inn, Old Radnor (01544 350655). Great location and charming. On a hill with views of mid Wales.  New owners who have really improved the food.
  3. The Tram Inn, Eardisley (01544 327251). Recently and tastefully refurbished. Good restaurant-type food and a boule court.
  4. The Royal Oak, Gladestry (01544 370669). Old fashioned and charming pub over the border into Wales. Best to leave a car there and then walk to it for lunch over Hergest Ridge - gorgeous views.
  5. The Salutation Inn, Weobley (01544 318443). Nice pub in idyllic Herefordshire village.
  6. The Bulls Head, Craswall (01981 510616).  This is a 45 minute drive but worth it if combining it with a trip to Hay-on-Wye or The Black Mountains.  Very good food and the decor in the bar is wonderfully untouched for many decades.  Phone first to check it is open and to book if eating.

Restaurants

  1. The Stagg Inn, Titley (01544 230221) - 15 minutes drive at most. Michelin 1* restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere. Much written about in the national press.
  2. Mr Underhill's (01584 874431) Fantastic 1* Michelin Restaurant in Ludlow - you have to book well in advance for dinner. Great setting for a summers' lunch.  It is currently up for saleso there may be some changes.  Please call first.
  3. The Riverside Inn, Aymestry (01568 708440) - attractive riverside pub with good food - try and dine in the pub rather than the restaurant as ambience better. Near Wheely Wonderful Cycling if you wanted to combine activity with lunch.
  4. Jules' Restaurant, Weobley (01544 318206). A more old fashioned restaurant and the chef and owner is very charismatic (Herefordshire's answer to Basil Faulty).  Never disappointing.
  5. The Hat Shop, Presteigne (01544 260017). Good ambience and inexpensive. Go for drink at The Radnorshire Arms first.
  6. The Jolly Frog, Lentwardine (01547 540298). For a land locked county this gastropub does great seafish - the dressed crab is just amazing.
  7. La Becasse, Ludlow (01584 872325). Newly awarded a Michelin* Reports are it is excellent but we haven't been there ourselves.
  8. Old Downton Lodge (01568 770820). Exclusive small restaurant
  9. The Clive Restaurant, Brimfield (01584 856665). Buzzy modern restaurant next to the new Ludlow organic food Centre.  It is worth visiting both.

Curries/Takeaways

  1. Hyberbad, Kington (01544 231999). Friendly local Indian Takeaway. Very reasonably priced
  2. The Bangalore Lounge, 27A West Street, Leominster (01568 620178).  Definitely the pick of the bunch.  The food here is just great.  The restaurant is up an unattractive stairway above the Halifax but don't be put off.  You must book and ask not to sit upstairs as it's much nicer downstairs.
  3. Shagbagh, Leominster (01568 614500). Usual Indian Takeaway - will deliver for very little cost
  4. The New Golden Dragon, 21 Broad Street, Leominster (01568 613203). Usual Chinese takeaway
